When Jesus also had been baptized and was
praying, the heaven was opened,
(Luke 3:21
NRSV)
As we mover further into this new year, it would be good for us
to deal with the subject of prayer. It was entirely natural for
Jesus, immediately following his baptism, to pray. Prayer played a
major role in his entire ministry. Here he was the very
manifestation of God on earth, and yet he felt the need to be in
continuous communication with God. Contrast his example with the
practice of many of us.
When Sally in the PEANUTS comic strip was called on in Sunday
School to lead her class in prayer, she adapted the only prayer
she knew: "Now I lay us down to sleep...." Maybe her prayer was a
commentary on her Sunday School class. It is more likely, however,
that it is a commentary on us.
Make prayer one of your top priorities.
Dear Jesus, renew my desire to pray everyday. Amen.
2Devote yourselves to prayer, being
watchful and thankful. 3And pray for
us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may
proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.
4Pray that I may proclaim it clearly,
as I should. 5Be wise in the way you
act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
6Let your conversation be always full
of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer
everyone. Colossians 4:2-6

They labor well who intercede
For others with a pressing need;
It's on their knees they often work
And from its rigor will not shirk. —D. De Haan

POEM
Give Thanks
Give thanks being able to get out of bed
Give thanks for all who show kindness
Give thanks to the Lord above you
For waking you from your blindness
Making a way, where there is none
Giving love to you and ones that share
Give thanks to the ones he sent you
For you know he is the one to care
He will take away all your pains
And turn you life into something good
Sharing with you all the heartache
He knows you, and he understood
All the tribulations you will endure
Giving thanks will turn you around
Give thanks and it will always help you
His love is the greatest to be found
Remember how you came to be here
It is God's love that will set you free
Listen to your heart and He'll hear you
Give thanks for he loves you and me
Thank God for His love

Johnny, a very bright 5 year old,
told his daddy he'd like to have a baby brother and, along with his
request, offered to do whatever he could to help. His dad, a very
bright 35 year old, paused for a moment and then replied, " I'll tell
you what, Johnny, if you pray every day for two months for a baby
brother, I guarantee that God will give you one!"
Johnny responded eagerly to his dad's challenge and went to his
bedroom early that night to start praying for a baby brother.
He prayed every night for a whole month, but after that time, he
began to get skeptical. He checked around the neighborhood and found
out that what he thought was going to happen, had never occurred in
the history of the neighborhood. You just don't pray for two months
and then, whammo- a new baby brother. So, Johnny quit praying. After
another month, Johnny's mother went to the hospital. When she came
back home, Johnny's parents called him into the bedroom. He cautiously
walked into the room, not expecting to find anything, and there was a
little bundle lying right next to his mother. His dad pulled back the
blanket and there was -- not one baby brother, but two!! His mother
had twins!
Johnny's dad looked down at him and said, "Now aren't you glad
you prayed?"
Johnny hesitated
a little and then looked up at his dad and said, "Yes, but aren't you
glad I quit when I did?"

We need to set aside the time
To read God's Word and pray,
And listen for the Spirit's voice
To guide us in His way. —Sper
Time is a friend when you use it to strengthen your
friendship with Jesus.
